Born the day Star Wars was released in Grand Forks, BC, a small town just north of the US Border, Mawz spent his childhood years in the scenic Okanagan Valley of the BC Interior and his teenage years in the rugged environment of the Sudbury Basin in Northern Ontario. He moved to Toronto in his early 20’s and has been stuck there ever since. An avid photographer in his teens who gave up photography shortly after graduating from High School, he took up a camera again in 2002 and has rarely been seen without one since.
Primarily a film photographer, Mawz’s work explores the city and its environs as if it were a natural landscape. Informed by the landscapes of his youth and both by the great Western landscapists and classic street photography Mawz continues to explore both Toronto in its grey dreariness and Sudbury, ON, where a city finds itself slipped in between the rugged granite landscape of the Canadian Shield.
